In class, we did a demonstration. We placed a candle upright in a dish of water. We then lowered a glass over the candle. We watched closely as the candle went out and the water rose.
Several other things happened as well. We decided to use the scientific method to try to figure out why the water rose.
At home, only do this with adult supervision. A thin candle works well, and birthday candles work best. Floating candles are also interesting.
Use different shaped glass containers for interesting results. Do not use plastic or paper containers over the flame. If this cannot be performed at home, see Ms. Lowe.
